Chuck Wagon Lore

"Only a fool argues with a skunk, a mule, or a chuck wagon cook".

"Although the cowboys took their orders form the trail boss, the cook was the real keeper of the crew. Besides preparing three hot meals a day, he also served as doctor and barber. On starlit nights his last responsibility before turning in was to point the chuck wagon's tongue toward the North Star so the trail boss would have a sure compass the next morning."

"Most cowboy cooks took pride in their reputation for meanness and in their position as master of the chuck wagon. If a cowboy offended the cook, he was likely to find gravel in his beans, or worse."
