Fall Fruit Brown Betty

For a special treat, top this dessert with light cream or a scoop of ice cream.

5 slices bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
4 medium cooking apples or 5 firm pears, peeled, cored and chopped
1/2 cup dried cranberries

In a medium bowl, mix bread cubes with butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and brown sugar. Arrange in alternate layers with apples and/or pears in a slow cooker. Sprinkle dried cranberries over each layer of fruit. Cover and cook 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours or until apples are tender. Serve warm.
