Fresh Berry Compote

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. A perfect family dessert as children of all ages love the fruits prepared this way. Use whatever combination of berries available at the time!

1 cup fresh blackberries
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup fresh strawberries or raspberries
1/4 cup raw sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice or orange juice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
freshly ground nutmeg

1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup half and half, or whipping cream
1/3 cup raw sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
pinch of sea salt
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

In a saucepan, combine berries, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gently stir over medium heat until berries are just heated through and juicy, about 2 minutes. Do not bring to a boil, just warm enough to get they a bit juicy. Set aside to cool.

In a 4 cup glass measuring cup or bowl, combine the milk and cream. Heat in microwave for 2 minutes. Whisk in the sugar. Set aside. In a glass or ceramic batter bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, salt, egg yolks, and butter. Blend the warmed milk mixture into this, and then cook for 2 minutes. Whisk well. Microwave another 1 minute, whisk. Repeat until custard has thickened, usually just 1 minute more. Blend in the vanilla. Spoon the mixture into beautiful glasses and allow to cool. Then gently spoon on some of the compote. This can be layered for a parfait look, if desired.
