Strawberries Mashed for Sauce

From Dorothy McNett's Recipe Book at

1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced thinly
1/4 cup sugar
a few grindings of white pepper, optional

Slice berries into a bowl and sprinkle with sugar and pepper. Allow to stand several hours and then mash them with a fork or with a potato masher. Use the juice as a berry syrup. It is thin but very delicious. Or, you could puree the whole mixture and use it as a chunky syrup.
