Tamale Pie ala San Juan Bautista

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. A very tasty quick and easy version of making traditional tamales. Make it as hot and spicey as you wish by adding hot salsa.

1/2 cup corn meal (polenta)
2 cups water
1 tablespoon chili powder

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound lean ground beef
2-3 mild or hot sausages, cut into pieces
1 package (10 oz) frozen corn (or 2-3 ears of fresh corn in the summer)
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/2 cup salsa (mild or hot, you choose)
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
freshly ground pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar or jack cheese
snipped chives or green onions

In glass or ceramic batter bowl combine corn meal, water and chili powder. Cover with glass or ceramic lid or plate. Cook in microwave 5 minutes. Stir. Cook another 2-3 minutes if necessary. Mixture should be a thick mush. In the meantime, in heavy bottomed saute or skillet heat oil and then quickly cook and stir the beef to cook and to break it up into small pieces. Add the sausages, corn, bell pepper and salsa. Cook to heat through, adding salt and pepper as desired. Line bottom and sides of a 9 inch round baking dish with the mush. Pour cooked meat mixture over the mush, draining first if it is very juicy. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and chives. Bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes. Serve.
