Orange Coffee Cake
From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. This recipe is depending on the zest of 3 oranges for that wonderful intense orange flavor. Serve as a morning coffee cake or a dessert. This is a wonderful birthday or other celebration cake.
2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In food processor with steel chopping blade in place, whirl flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt to blend. Add butter and process just to cut it into the flour mixture. Add egg, milk, zest and vanilla and process just to form a ball of dough, dusting hands or work surface with flour if needed. Divide dough into two parts, one a little larger than the other. Cover and let rest while you combine the 1/3 sugar, walnuts, flour, butter and orange zest. Set aside. Roll the larger part of the dough into a circle to fit 9 inch pie plate, bringing the dough up the sides of the pan. Sprinkle with orange zest filling. Roll remaining dough to place on top. It can be roughly done, does not need to be perfectly covering the filling. Bake 25-30 minutes. In meantime, in food processor with steel chopping blade in place, whirl orange juice with powdered sugar to make a glaze. After removing cake from oven, drizzle with the glaze and garnish with zest of orange. If using for a celebration or birthday cake, dollop with a bit of mascarpone or whipped cream and stick birthday candles or other decorations into the cake and continue to celebrate!
