Cut across the grain of the vegetable as much as possible. Heat the oil in a wok or stir fry pan so that it is hot but not smoking. Using a silicone stirring spatula or spoon, quickly stir in the slivered garlic or onion or both, and cook and stir about 30-60 seconds. Then add the other vegetables and cook and stir until it is tender-crisp, about 2-3 minutes.
