Dort and Duane's Oatmeal Cookies

From Dorothy McNett's Recipe Book at This is another version of Pride of Iowa Cookies made often on the farms that my cousin Duane Childs and I grew up on near Manchester, Iowa. Duane and I (just kids on the farm) were baking, we needed more flour than we had in the cupboard so we added the oatmeal. Everyone loved them better than the original.

1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups shortening (I prefer to use butter instead)
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups unbleached all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup oatmeal
1 bag chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the sugars and butter together until fluffy, adding the eggs and vanilla. Stir in the remaining ingredients and drop by a tablespoon onto baking sheets. Bake about 20-25 minutes, or until cookies are done and nicely browned. Makes about five dozen "farm sized" cookies.
