Potatoes Au Gratin

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com.

4 -5 medium potatoes
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic, cut in half
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
freshly ground pepper
1 cup cheese, shredded (Gruyere or cheddar)
1 cup half and half

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Scrub potatoes. Pierce the skins and place potatoes on a glass or ceramic plate. Cook in microwave for 4 minutes total, just to warm and partially cook them. When they cool enough to easily handle, slice each into thin slices. Spread the oil on the bottom of 8 by 8 inch baking dish or pan. (or use a clay/ceramic round baking dish, if you have one.) Brush the cut sides of the garlic all over the pan, then mince it and scatter over the pan. Layer half of the potato slices in the pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and 1/2 cup of the cheese. Layer the remaining potato slices over the cheese, and then pour the half and half over. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Place in hot oven and bake about 45 minutes, or until nice and bubbly, starting to brown, and the potatoes are tender. Place under hot broiler for about 2 minutes to give a bit of a crust and to brown thoroughly. Cool about 10 minutes before serving.
