California Date Torte

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. Serve this with Orange or Lemon Custard for a very special dessert. You can also change the name of this recipe to California Fig Torte and use chopped dried figs instead of the dates! Or, a combination is great as well! Have fun, California Dreaming!

1/4 cup all purpose unbleached flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
a few grindings of pepper
2 eggs
1 cup raw sugar
2 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 pound dried California dates, chopped (2 cups)
1 cup California walnuts, chopped

1 recipe Orange or Lemon Custard, for topping

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spread a little oil or butter over a 9 inch square baking pan. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. In a batter bowl, whisk the eggs well. Add the sugar, milk, oil or butter and vanilla. Blend well, and stir in the flour mixture along with the chopped dates and walnuts. Spread into the oiled pan. Bake 30 minutes, or until nicely browned and is done to the touch. Allow to cool. Serve with the custard for topping, or freshly whipped heavy cream.
