Kipper Paste Appetizers

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothycnett.com. One of many variations of recipes from Scotland using kippers (herring).

2 pkg. Crown Prince naturally smoked Kipper Snacks (3.25 oz. each pkg)
2 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
1/2 cup softened cream cheese or creme fraiche
1 teaspoon anchovy paste
pinch of cloves
pinch of mace
thinly sliced toasted bread or Scottish crackers
sliced cheeses as desired
slices of sausage, etc...(Maple Syrup Breakfast Pork sausage)

If using kippers that still have skins and bones attached, carefully remove them. If using ready to eat canned kipper snacks, use directly from the can. In food processor or blender, blend the kippers, soft butter, cream cheese, anchovy paste, cloves and mace to make a smooth batter. Pack into a round serving cup or dish and serve for a spread over thinly sliced toasts or crackers. It is also used often for a small sandwich spread. Great with sliced cheeses and sausages, etc....
