1 pound split green or yellow peas
In heavy bottomed stock pot combine the peas, chopped potato and onion, herbs, salt, pepper and cloves. Add enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cover. Simmer about 45 - 60 minutes, adding more water if necessary. When done, cool slightly and then mash everything adding the butter. Serve with cooked ham, roasts of all sorts, chicken, etc, etc. etc......
