Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage

From Dorothy McNett's recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. So easy and tasty to cook this in a glass or ceramic batter bowl in the microwave. However, if desired, place all in a stainless heavy bottomed stock pot, bring to a boil, reduce to simmer and cook about 1 hour.

4 tablespoons butter
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
6 whole cloves
6 juniper berries
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons raw sugar
1 small / medium head red cabbage, shredded
2 tablespoons sorghum or molasses
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in a glass or ceramic batter bowl. Cover. Microwave on high for 10 minutes, then on half power for 30 minutes, or until tender. Serve hot with turkey, or with German sausages or American burgers and fries. This can be made days in advance, and then reheated. It is very good just at room temperature as well.
