Red Cabbage and German Sausages

1 small red cabbage, shredded
Combine shredded cabbage, apples, onions, vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, caraway seeds and butter in a heavy bottomed saucepan or stock pot. Bring to a boil, reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook about 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and correct the seasonings, adding your desired amount of sliced sausages and serve warm. (This is also easy to do in a microwave oven for half of the recipe, using a glass or ceramic batter bowl. Cover. Microwave on high for 5 minutes, then on half power for about 30 minutes.)
