Pears Poached in Red Wine or Apple Juice

4 firm but ripe pears, such as Bosc
Using a grapefruit knife, remove the core from the bottom of each pear. Bring the remaining ingredients to a boil in a pan large enough to hold the pears upright. Add pears, cover, simmer 35-40 minutes, or until tender. Remove pears to a dish, and bring the liquids to a rapid boil to reduce the liquid to a wonderful syrup to be drizzled over the pears at serving time.
